Education and training in healthcare IT

Healthcare informatics professionals spend a lot of time organising and planning training for other people, particularly as new systems roll out in the NHS. It's very easy for their own professional and personal development to take second place when there's an urgent need to bring everyone else up to speed on a new system in the trust or help to train the trainers for a future development.

So, this Special Report on Education and Training redresses the balance with a report on moves to introduce a more organised approach to education and training for health informatics staff and to make continuing professional development part of a regulated structure for the growing group of people who make healthcare IT their profession.

The training challenge in health informatics
No-one knows exactly how many health informaticians are working in the NHS, although past surveys have put the figure at 29,000. As the numbers have grown, so the work and the education and training needs have increased in volume and scope. But such a large and essential group of staff have no agreed career structure, no professional body and no regulation.

XML in Healthcare,

This two-day course surveys XML and other related open standards, including HL7, that are being applied to the management and exchange of information in healthcare. We focus on how XML can be used as the core technology in patient-centred health records systems, implemented in local, regional and national architectures.
